Then its time to head for Mickey’s. Exchange stories about
the day. Hear about the various walks the rocks you can fish from
the fish you can catch the sights still to be seen and listen to
stories of days that are long gone.
You don’t often find works of art in small rural pubs –
but you will in Mickey’s. While Achill is synonymous with
Paul Henry, Dooega has in modern times been the home of three artists,
Seosamh O’Dalaigh, Henry Healy and the Austrian surrealist
Fritz Aigner. Aigner lived in Dooega during the early sixties and
returned regularly to Dooega until his death in Jan 2005.
There are no Paul Henry’s hanging in Mickey’s but we
do have works by O’Dalaigh, Healy and Aigner.
Locality
Dooega is a small fishing village on the Atlantic Drive cradled
between Knockmore and Minaun hills. It looks out over the Atlantic
Ocean to Clare Island the home of Granuaile [Grace O’Malley].
Dooega has a Blue Flag beach and a small jetty where the local fishermen
moor their fishing boats – mainly traditional currachs. It
also the home of Colaiste Acla: an activity based Irish adventure
college that is renowned for its Irish language courses.
Dooega is miles away from the hustle and bustle of ordinary day
modern living. On a calm evening the turf smoke rises skyward and
scents the air just as it did in Paul Henry’s time almost
a century ago. Go for a walk along one of our headlands or stroll
down to the jetty to meet the fishing boats coming in.
